How to Create/Make Hard Drive/disk Partitions on Windows with Different file System Formats?

In this document we have covered how we can create Multiple partitions on external hard drive/USB, so that you can use your hard drive on different Os like windows, mac, linux and Microsoft gaming consoles like ps4 etc. where you can perform all tasks like copy, paste, delete, edit and Modify etc. so lets start understanding partitioning on windows.

Step 1: Plug in your Hard Drive to your windows Pc.

Step 2: Click Start or press Windows Key and type disk management, you will this option “create and format hard disk partitions” click on it. Disk management Window will appear.

Step 3. Disk Management window will Appear. Now Click on “New Volume I” or “Disk 1 Removable (F)”. This is your External Drive with NTFS File system.

Step 4: Now Right Click on “New Volume (I)” Click on “Delete Volume”

Step 5: Now you can see “Unallocated Space” right click on it and click on new simple volume.

Step 4: Now you will see a “New Simple Volume Wizard”. Now click on Next on the bottom of screen.

Step 5: Now here you have to type in what size of partition you want to create. here value of partition are in MBs (Megabytes) so make sure you multiply it with 1024 mb. so if you are looking to create a partition of 100 gb then multiply it with 1024 mb to type here (100 gb * 1024 mb = 102400 mb).

So here i am going to type 204800, as i am creating a 200 Gb partition.

Step 5: Now on this Screen you have Assign Drive Letter. select Drive Letter from Dropdown menu.

I have Assigned j as Drive Letter Now click on Next.

Step 6: Now From this format Partition Window choose File System according to your preference. here i am going to choose “ExFat” as i want to use this Drive on Mac as well as Windows.Now in Volume Label you can type what Name you want for your partition, i am typing “back up” as my Volume Name and Click on Next.

Now here you can see a ExFAT File System Partition has been created.


Step 7. Now here you can see unallocated space Right Click and click on new simple volume to create another Partition. Here i am going to create three Partitions. you can create more or less according to your preference. Now if you have noticed in Unallocated Space remaining size is 731.29 GB. so here you can create a single partition of 731.29 GB or you can create a more different size partitions.

Step 8: Click on Next to Create Partition.

Step 9: Here you can type Partition Size you want to create or you can click on Next. here i am going to create another partition of 200Gb.

Step 10: Type 204800 if you also want to create 200 Gb Partition. now Click on Next.

Step 10: Assign a Drive Letter as you did in Step 5. here i am assigning K as my Drive Letter. now Click on Next.

Step 11: Now Select the File System Format. if you looking to create a partition which you want to use only on windows then you can choose NTFS From File System Drop Down menu. here i am going to use ExFat as i want to use it on windows as well as on Mac.Now in Volume Label you can type what Name you want for your partition, i am leaving Volume label as it is and Click on Next.

Step 12: Click on Finish.

Now you can See a “New Volume” Partition of 200 Gb.

Step 13: Now again i am Going to create another partition with remaining Unallocated Space of 531 Gb. so again Right Click and click on new Simple Volume.

Step 14: now click on Next.

Step 15: As we are not going to create any more partitions i am just leaving the volume size as it is and clicking on Next.

Step 16: Choose Drive letter. i am choosing here M. Click on Next.

Step 17:Now Choose File system Format. here i am choosing ExFat. Click on Next.

Step 18: Now Click on Finish.

So here we have created 3 partitions, you can create as many as you want. so this is how you can create partitions with different file formats on Microsoft Windows.
